For many professional photographers, a camera lens is as essential a core parameter as the image quality. Especially for travel photographers and humanities photographers, the practical value of light and portable lenses is higher. And Sony G series of many models meet these needs. Today Sony has officially released three G-series lenses, FE 50mm F2.5g, FE 40mm F2.5g and FE 24mm F2.8g. All three lenses have high-resolution performance and quiet focusing function. 50mm is suitable for portrait shooting, 40mm for documentary street shooting, 24mm for landscape photography and VLOG shooting. Users can shoot different subjects through the combination of three lenses.
Sony's full-frame prime G lenses FE 50mm F2.5G, FE 40mm F2.5G and FE 24mm F2.8G will be available in mid-April 2021.
All three G lenses share the exact dimensions (68mm x 45mm diameter), filter size (49mm), and similar weight and feel (SEL50F25G: 174G, SEL40F25G: 173G, and SEL24F28G: 162G). They are all designed with an internal focus, allowing the easy interchange of lenses when used on a stabilizer. At the same time, each lens has an apparent focal length mark, easy to switch quickly.
Compact lightweight and high picture quality
These three new lenses continue the G-lens family's consistent, high-quality image performance while being very compact and lightweight. The unique optical design, combined with an aspheric lens and an ED (low dispersion) lens, provides high resolution while suppressing diffusion. The addition of aspheric lenses enables three lenses to achieve high centre-to-edge resolution even at the largest apertures and at shallower depths of field.
With an optimized circular aperture design, the three lenses can present the G lens's significant blurry effect at each lens's maximum aperture.
All three lenses have been carefully designed to be compact and lightweight to achieve excellent manoeuvrability for different scenes and themes. Whether it's a full-frame or APS-C frame for portraits, landscapes and documentaries, or a stabilizer mounted camera for video, the three lenses are balanced in size and weight.
Focus distance
The 50mm focal length of Fe 50mm F2.5g is suitable for portrait shooting, with the closest focusing distance of 0.35m (AF) / 0.31m (MF) and a maximum magnification of 0.18x (AF) / 0.21x (MF), which makes it easy to shoot in different environments and objects.
The Angle of view presented by the 40mm focal length of Fe 40mm F2.5g is suitable for documentary street photography, with the closest focusing distance of 0.28m (AF) / 0.25m (MF) and the maximum magnification of 0.20x (AF) / 0.23x (MF). The Angle of view presented by 40mm focal length is the ideal Angle of view for video shooting, closer to the natural Angle of the human eye, and is very suitable for film shooting. For a photoshoot, a 40mm focal length makes the subject stand out from the background.
The FE 24mm F2.8g lens offers a wide viewing angle with a 24mm focal length, suitable for landscape photography and VLOG photography. Its closest focusing distance is 0.24m (AF) / 0.18m (MF), and its maximum magnification is 0.13x (AF) / 0.19x (MF). It can shoot close-up shots with a background blinding effect at a large aperture.
Professional handling and reliability The three G lenses are very compact and have professional handling at the same time. The lens has a focus and holds the button, focus mode switch, aperture ring and stepless CLICK ON/OFF switch, making it easier for users to shoot. The focus and hold button can be set through the camera menu as a standard user function. The lens aperture ring is more intuitive than the body when taking photos and videos. Simultaneously, all three lenses provide the CLICK ON/OFF switch of the stepless aperture, switched during video shooting to achieve quiet step-less aperture adjustment. Also, when the lens is manually focused, the focusing ring's response is precise and linear, which makes the control feel more intuitive. The linear response can be carried out according to the photographer's intention, and fine focusing adjustment can be realized.
The lens hood and the filter on the lens body have the same diameter (49mm), which allows the same lens cap and filter to be mounted on the lens hood and the lens body. Enhanced endoscopic strength and durability, with dust and moisture-proof design, can be safely used in the complex outdoor environment.
Quick, precise and quiet autofocus
FE 50mm F2.5G, FE 40mm F2.5G and FE 24mm F2.8G have two linear motors, which can provide fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and have excellent tracking and focusing performance, which can keep regular monitoring even if the object movement changes instantly, easily suitable for the shooting of sports subjects. The auto-focus of all three lenses is very quiet so that it can be used for both photos and video.
